Marshfield News-Herald review for "GREASE"
by Ashley A. Smith • Gannett Wisconsin Media • March 19, 2009
Hot rods and angels, leather jackets and high school, the musical "Grease" has made its way into central Wisconsin.
The Marshfield Area Youth Theater will present the musical to raise money for Children's Miracle Network.
"We wanted to donate to a children's charity that speaks for itself," said Mona Hamlin, the musical's director. "It's well-known, and all the money stays in our area."
Though the classic story of bad boy meets girl-next-door has been a favorite for many people, putting the production together was an experience for cast members. That included Louis Hoeser, 22, who — without any prior experience singing, dancing or acting on stage — received the lead role of Danny.
After hearing the musical was in need of more men, Hoeser, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield-Wood County, auditioned for a role in the chorus.
"They loved my voice and asked me if I would play Danny," Hoeser said. "In high school, I was the manly man — I played football, was a farm boy — but now I found out I enjoy to dance, and it's gotten me in better shape."
Hoeser said he isn't nervous, at least not yet. "Not at the moment," he said. "But I'm sure I will as the show gets closer."
Hoeser has been matched with Arynn Martin, who will play Sandy. Martin, 17, has been acting for years and was in the group's play last year.
"For me, it was doing this for the Children's Miracle Network," she said. "It's really cool how I can do something I love, so others can do what they love.
"It isn't just raising money for some little thing. Out of all the productions I've been in, in my heart, this one is the best."
That sentiment is felt through all their rehearsals and on stage. From the children to the young adults, all the actors have been having fun and doing it for a worthy cause, said Matthew Vogel, 20, who plays Kenickie.
"My favorite performance is Greased Lightning" Vogel said. "When you got a couple of guys together and create a crazy dance... I wouldn't have it any other way."
Last year, the group raised $3,000 for the Children's Miracle Network, and this year, it hopes as many people or more will turn out to see the performances.
"The kids have done an awesome job, and we're excited about it," Hamlin said. "We're excited over the fact we could give Children's Miracle Network money if people come to our production."

Synopsis for "The Education of Angels"
Nick and Jenna are two angels-in-training who are about to be sent back to Earth for their final exam. The problem is, these two can't seem to get along, which leads to a pretty competitive situation. When they return to Earth, they find Dave, a guy who is even more mixed up than they are. He is at the church, long before he should be on his wedding day, trying to decide whether or not to go forward with the wedding. Throw in a domineering ex-wife and the fact that Dave is the only one that can see only one of the angels... and multiple comic situation ensue. There is a serious side to this play, though, as we see Nick struggling to understand why he's back on Earth and perhaps, indeed, why he is an angel in the first place.
